Tuesday, October 31, 2006 NANOWRIMO ... and we're off

So I wouldn't call it stymied, or writer's block, or anything like that. Just a whole bunch of itty bitty little projects that have really kept me from writing anything new for a couple of months. Revisions. Edits. Webpage recoding. That sort of thing.

Well the dam has broken. I've started my NaNoWriMo project (that's national novel writing month), which I hope will be the start of a new series that takes off of my Winter Quickie coming out in Dec.

Polar Bears. Oh my.

Yummy!

And now I'm off to bed...

PS: The goal up there is a daily, standard, NaNoWriMo goal. My personal goal is 2000 words a day. But first, I need my sleep.

Also this month marks the first author interview for her newsletter. Mary interviews fellow Night Whispers author Mechele Armstrong, author of the Blood Lines series from Loose-Id publishing.

And now for the reviews. . .

Sons of Zeus – Sexual Healing is a delicious and heart-warming tale of one woman’s struggle with her self-confidence and the man who shows her the inner beauty she possesses. Ari is a great character, suffering from not only the physical marks of the accident, but emotional ones as well. Thanos is superbly crafted, a compassionate and true gentleman with a sexy twist. The byplay between these two is spellbinding, and you’ll quickly be drawn in to their passion and pain. Mary Winter pens a unique and moving tale that hums with sensuality and emotion. Five Angels! - Michelle, Fallen Angel Reviews

"Autumn Animalia: Revealing Photos is a too-hot-to-touch erotic quickie with a very unique twist. I’ve not read many shapeshifter romances with this type of animal. Mary Winter aptly and interestingly portrayed the very nature of her chosen species, and this reviewer was drawn in to the emotion and passion that pervades this tale. Revealing Photos is packed with imagery and bursting with some very erotic scenes. With a fine attention to detail and an excellent, taut romantic plot, Revealing Photos is a story you’ll love from the minute you begin it. Five Angels!" - Michelle, Fallen Angel Reviews

And for PRIESTESS OF DESIRE in Dreams of the Oasis III: By far the favorite story in this anthology for this reviewer, Mary Winter has penned a powerful story that has depth, emotion and a sexy, sensuous romance. Multi-dimensional characters, a plot with a good conflict and some really sizzling sex make this an unforgettable story. This reviewer enjoyed this story and warns the reader to keep the ice bucket handy. - Valerie, Love Romances

Lots more reviews are listed on her newsletter, so visit http://www.marywinter.com/newsletter.htm and check out all the great reviews!!!

Thanks!

Sunday, October 22, 2006 Another successful backup

So I'm sitting here watching the Heroes marathon. I'm glad I finally had a chance to catch this show.

And I've been remiss in blogging. My bad. Forgive me?

Got my absentee ballot set on my desk so I can vote, and...I've backed up my laptop. I don't do it as often as I should. I work in IT. I receive calls from people whose computer's have given them the dreaded BSOD (blue screen of death) or won't load windows or a hundred other afflictions that might cause the computer to die, and when I ask "when was your last backup?" the deafening silence on the other line tells the story. I know, if (heaven forbid) it would happen, I'd have the same deafening silence.

So, while I'm watching tv, I backed up my hard drive. Whew! Crisis averted for this week, and I didn't need superpowers to do it. :)

Kind of gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. :) Just a gentle reminder from your neighborhood writer that if you have files you are worried about on your computer, please backup your files.

Hopefully, you'll never need it. It's like car insurance that way.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!!!!

Thursday, October 19, 2006 post #100

Ooh, this is post #100 in my blog. How exciting is that?

And hey, I posted in my blog two days in a row. *looks around for an apocalypse to start happening*

So, we're a Nielson family now. Just got the call. No, not "the call" but the one from the Nielson people saying they want to survey our TV habits. HAH! We're going to so skew the numbers.

TV? Who has time for TV? I get my weekly David Boreanaz fix on Bones (damn you baseball for preempting my hour with DB!!!!!), and I watch Battlestar Galactica, and the Daily Show while I cook dinner...and that's it. I listen to the music channel on the satellite and I watch the weather channel, but that's it. Unless it's something funky on the food network on a Sat or Sun night when the brain is too dead to write... I don't watch television.

I don't have time. :( And sometimes, even with a gazillion and one channels on the satellite, there's nothing on.

So, what do you watch on TV?

Wednesday, October 18, 2006 The Perfect Haircut

I meant to blog about this last week, but then I thought, "oh, that'd be a good blog for the weekend" and then time just slipped away from me. Have you ever made a drastic change in your hair and went, "oh yeah!!!!" Well I did.

I have an hour lunch, so last week, on my lunch break, I went and got all my hair cut off. I have fine hair. Like baby fine. Can't do anything with it. It won't hold a perm, and it's stick straight. Plus, I'm hair stupid. That's right, I admit it. I'm hair stupid. I grew up a tomboy, and I grew up in the 80's in the era of skyscraper bangs (which mine never did) and wings (which my hair never did). So, having grown up knowing my hair wouldn't be "fashionable," I never learned how to do anything with it.

So here's what I do. Cut it off...grow it out...cut it off....grow it out. You can see a recurring theme here, right?

Well, I'd grown out my hair so it was down past my shoulders. You'll see it in those book signing photos I PROMISE I'll upload soon.

So all I can do is whip it back into a pony tail and call it good. Well, you know...it's nice, but meh. And I really like short, cute pixie hair, but no one before has ever quite got it "right." Well apparently I was on the same psychic wavelength as my stylist (mental note to self drop off bookmarks and RT playing cards because she was excited to hear I was a writer), because I told her what I wanted (about this long, layered, over the ears). And she goes "a pixie cut."

I was like, "yeah, a pixie cut."

So cut she did...and dear goddess, it's PERFECT. I just love my hair and have gotten compliments on it. It's the perfect haircut, and I'm quite thrilled with it.

So thrilled, I just had to share...

I finally have the perfect haircut!

Saturday, October 14, 2006 Are you a Battlestar Galactica fan?

I don't know about you, but I am really liking this new season. I found this website: All about Tahmoh Penikett and thought I'd share the hotness that is Tahmoh Penikett (Helo). This viper pilot can rev my engines anyday.

And, of course now we're off to watch the next Rome S1 DVD (oh yummy decadent men) that came from Netflix.

*happy sigh*

Thursday, October 12, 2006 A new book cover AND bulletin boards

Yes, there it is in all its glory -- the cover for Riding Partner my M/M novella. This one releases November 1, and I can't wait!!!

Here's a blurb: Equestrian Derek Whitten watched his dreams fall with the last jump at the Athens Olympics. Not only did he lose the gold medal, but his personal life imploded as well. Now, in financial trouble and needing to sell his prize horse, Derek turns to the one man he trusts. A simple business transaction, that’s all it can ever be, no matter how much he wants it to be something more.

Charles DeMorinson never blamed Derek for his horse’s performance at the Olympics. Yet, he watched both of their dreams, and his lover, slip through his grasp. He’s spent the years since regretting not fighting harder for their relationship. But now, Derek’s on his doorstep, and he needs his help.

Time and distance did little to douse their attraction for each other. And when Derek returns, Charles is ready to stake the claim he should have made in Athens. Except if he on holds too tightly, he’ll earn nothing but resentment. Yet he let Derek go once, and he won’t make the same mistake again. He just has to convince him that they both need one thing – each other.

~~~
AND, I've dusted it off, done some renovations, but my Mary Winter bulletin boards are back in business. To visit go to: http://marywinter.proboards20.com/index.cgi and take a look around. I hope you enjoy your stay and decide to pop in from time-to-time and say "hi!"
Wednesday, October 04, 2006 National Buy a Friend a Book Week
http://www.dhamel.com/buyafriendabook
Did you know this was national buy a friend a book week? I didn't, but I'm happy to know I celebrated by providing a couple of really good friends (like been friends since I was 18ish -- yikes!) copies of Dreams of the Oasis III. Why not share your favorite authors with a friend? We don't mind being passed around. And besides, what better gift is there to give (besides money, naked Angel/Spike ,etc...) than a book?
Happy reading everyone!
Tuesday, October 03, 2006 Taking the Plunge....nanowrimo
"I'm a fucking lunatic," I say.
From my partner, silence reigns as he debates how to tactfully answer my statement. "Well," he replies after a long pause, "that's an interesting way to open a conversation."
"It is, isn't it? Quite the opening hook."
Yes, I talk this way. Why? Because I'm a writer. So why am I a lunatic you might ask? Well, because I signed up for National Novel Writing Month. Thirty days to write 50,000 words. That averages out to a shade under 1700 words a day, an easily achievable goal for someone like myself. Except I have ninety million projects, revisions, deadlines, and oh hell, why not? Like I told my other half, it isn't like someone is going to come break my kneecaps if I don't make it. Right? They're not, are they?
Sometimes as a writer we get caught up in the polishing and the perfecting that it's fun just to put fingers to keyboard, muse to work, and just see what happens.
That's my goal for November. Just to see what happens!
