Friday, February 24, 2006 My mind works in mysterious ways

Story ideas come from anywhere. Take this situation that happened at work today. I mentioned that something was "sinking like a stone." Well, one of my coworkers thought I said "sinking like a stove." So, this sparked a Mythbusters-ian converstion about how fast would a stove sink? Would a stove really sink, or would the air trapped in the oven compartment help hold it afloat?

So my mind took the image of someone tossing an old stove off a bridge and decided that this character, who is an eccentric old man, decided that running electricity through the stove would allow him to contact aliens. And maybe, what if a) he spoke with the "aliens" (aka channel cats) under the bridge or b) saw the fish kill that would most certainly occur from electricity running through the stove and the surrounding water as a sign from the aliens.

Or, take a later conversation. A very nice coworker was sharing his Hershey's kisses with us. However, he did so by throwing them over the cubes at us. No big deal, except for the one kiss flew past a co-worker's ear, rolled under the desk (I later found it in the middle of the aisle). We decided that the kiss was lost forever beneath a desk.

Writer's mind in action again. . .
What if the chocolate kiss, left underneath the desk mutated into this creature, who them came out and started eating people.

Both ideas dutifully put in my PDA. You never know when a story idea might come, and you know, I bet they'd both be fun to write. :)

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Tuesday, February 21, 2006 Knock your socks of story-telling

I'm a reader at heart. It's how I got into this writing gig anyway. I read books and was at that age where we're all supposed to decide what we want to be when we "grow up" and I thought "wouldn't it be cool to write the books that other people read?" Viola! An author is born.

Like any reader, I love it when a book is page-turning-delicious, one I cannot put down or get grumpy when I do have to put down. I just finished a couple such books.

Wicked Nights by Nina Bangs. Of course it doesn't hurt that we have an Angel-esque looking vamp on the cover and an oh so hunky brooding vampire hero. But wow. What a fun romp!

Bio Rescue by S.L. Viehl. I love the ocean with whales and dolphins. Marine life fascinates me, and so this science fiction novel dealing with whale-like characters (all different alien species) drew my attention. We have alien aliens (which way cool and so hard to write!) a fast paced story and romance. Happy sighs all around.

And that's all. I just wanted to tell you that I'm thrilled to have found two rocking books!!!

Sunday, February 19, 2006 The Writer's Life

is not a glamorous one. My hours at work changed to second shift, so while everyone else is spending time with friend and family and sleeping the night away, I'm either working, or writing. But I love the late night hours. It's quiet once I cook dinner, and I can settle onto the internet without the distractions of seeing who is online and finding people with whom to chat. It's a productive time for me, and I just finished up revisions on one project, and am working on revisions on a couple more. Then, I can start anew with new characters and new stories. It's a fascinating process, seeing a story that started out in the mind emerge on paper, then go through the editing process until it becomes the books you read. A process I love, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Personalized rejection letters

or when someone tells you no, thanks feels so good!

One of the ways a writer knows when s/he is reaching the elusive level of being published by a NY publisher (or accepted by an agent) is when the personalized rejection letters start returning in those SASEs, instead of a form "sorry this isn't right for us" letter. I've received my share of both as I strive toward my dream of being a self-supporting writer, but lately I've been starting to get the more personalized rejections.

I never thought I'd jump up and down and cheer when I received a rejection letter. Okay, so it isn't the, "your book went to auction and so-and-so offered you an advance of a million dollars" happy-happy, but it certainly helps buoy the "oh crud! another rejection letter" blues. Especially when you hear "I like your writing, but this project doesn't work for me." It's like going shopping and finding the dress of your dreams -- just not in your color. Perhaps there's another color in the warehouse. Or maybe they can order it for you. All you have to do is ask, and boy am I glad that I'm being asked.

Five little words that are music to any writer's ears (and no, it isn't "I want to buy it.")...

Please send me something else.

Really? Can I? How many novels you want? One? Five? Ten? A series? Two series? What more do you want? I've got it.

It's an outlook, a way of looking at this crazy business called publishing. No, it isn't an offer, but it is one, tiny little sign that I'm just one step closer to where I want to be. Just like life, writing is a journey. Except when I get where I want to be as a writer, I sure hope I've got some life left to enjoy it. (Grin!)

Off to send off another partial.....is this the something else for which you're looking? Gee, I sure hope so!
