Monday, August 13, 2007 Make A Difference Monday: Say Neigh to Horse Abuse

It's hot and humid here in Iowa. We've gotten some rain, and my yard, as well as Fortune's pasture is turning lush and green again. But there are parts of the country (the Southeast, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas) that haven't been so lucky. Hay prices are soaring. Horse owners with no money to buy hay are simply turning their horses loose.

In our state and national legislatures battles over horse slaughter, and what would happen should that outlet for unwanted horses be taken away, continue. Wild horses are taken off their lands in numbers that will make future herds less genetically diverse.

Animal cruelty cases continue. I can't watch Animal Cops without crying some nights to think that people would be so cruel and heartless as to starve or mutilate their pets.

This post isn't meant to depress you. Believe me, that's not my intent. But more, to let you know there are things you can do. The Humane Society of the United States, Hooved Animal Humane Society, Friends of Ferdinand, and many other organizations work tirelessly to improve the conditions for all animals.

So what can you do today? Click on the link above. Read a bit. If you feel so moved, write your senators or your congressmen (or women). If you can, donate money, goods, time, etc. And simply be aware. And, if like me, you have an equine in your life, the next time you see them give them a pat on the neck and an extra carrot. Because that, too, is a way to make a difference in the life of one creature.
